A-Roid

So Alex Rodriguez has come clean about being dirty. So that pretty much takes care of it. Baseball is a joke.

To interpret this into Canadian terms. Say Wayne Gretzky was under huge speculation that he had used something that helped make him unbelievable. And then yesterday out comes Sid Crosby saying that two years ago, he was using. That's what ball is looking at with two of its best offensive players of all-time in hot water over either lying about steriods (Barry Bonds) or admitting taking something, as A-Rod did.

I think maybe guys in the NHL should start taking something and then purposely get caught. If Gary Bettman had half a brain he'd make sure Alex Ovechkin failed something, maybe that way his dream of selling the game to Americans would work. People in the 50 States love baseball more than ever, despite the cheating that went on for nearly two decades. Seriously, we always talk about hockey players being so tough and sacrificing their bodies to win, well what about taking some PED's? If hockey players truly want to put their bodies in harms way, its the only way! It'll grow their physique and apparently the sport.

Listen, I don't condone what A-Rod did, but I understand it. Here's a guy that had just signed on for a 1/4 Billion dollars, more money than some provinces spend on education. You don't think he felt pressure to perform. And back 6 or 7 years ago when baseball clubhouses could easily be mistaken for a pharmacy, it's no wonder he tried a few things. Hell, it was more Vegas party than sport, ofcourse now the players are enduring a bit of hell.

I say good for Rodriguez for admitting it. Sure, he was basically caught, but he just said enough and fessed up. Maybe Roger Clemens and Barry Bonds should take a note from A-Roid and come clean about their dirtiness.

  1. A-Roid!!

Clemens is scum, always has been always will be.

    Baseball IS a joke.

Americans will never accept a sport that they don't dominate. Until they have more great hockey players than other countries....they won't care. This is why soccer will never catch on either.

  2. You play sports that you can understand. Why would a kid in the southern US watch hockey if he cant play it? Sure I realize they do have the odd rink, but seriously, fathers do not teach their kids to skate, shoot, etc.

We love hockey because we know and understand it. It also happens we are the best at it and makes it easier for us to continue to push to excel in it.

Now onto A-Rod. Here is what I do not get about this whole thing. Hypothetically, you are a scientist, and you are amoung the best in your field. Now, people who have no reason being as good as you start getting close or better because they take a magic pill. This means they are taking your dollars in free agency, endorsements, potential to hold records, etc.. Everyone is doing it. Therefore you do it as well so you eliminate the edge that people have gotten on you.

Look, athletes are NOT role models. We want them to be, but they are not. If a 15 year old kid sees Bonds, Clemens, etc, doing steroids and says, I can do that and throw a splitter too or hit 95 mph fast ball over a fence 400 feet away they have bigger problems than steroids. Their parents suck. their life is going sideways. I hate to be the one to let everyone in on this but come on! Wake up! None of these guys owe us anything.

We all knew it was happening, but did you turn away as Barry launched baseballs to the moon? No. Did you turn away when McGwire hit 62 even though earlier in the season we found andro in his locker and everyone knew? No. Why? We do not care!@!! We want to be him, we want to admire the moon shots, strike outs, enormous hits in football (Merriman, Harrison, '70s Steelers)

SO people, get off your horse, and enjoy the show, it is pretty entertaining.

  3. Has little to do with understanding, has to do with media hype as well as American domination.

Everyone can understand and play soccer.....yet Americans don't pay attention. Why? Because they aren't very good at it.

I can remember seeing Mark McGwire hit that 62nd homerun and a someone said "He's no Wayne Gretzky". Ain't that the truth.

  4. Comparing McGwire to Gretzky is not accurate either. You are talking about a middle of the pack Hall of Famer with the greatest a sport has ever seen. It had nothing to do with his moral integrity. Basically what was said is McGwire is not Babe Ruth.

Nothing to do with understanding? Are you kidding me? People like doing things they are good at. If you do not understand the game, you will not be good at it. It is especially important in hockey because you do not have set things happening all the time and decisions are made at a faster rate. It is not see ball hit ball. It is not I-FOrm HB sweep left. Things move faster.

People always give America crap for focusing their sports culture on what they are good at. Why? We do the same thing with hockey, and guess what? Americans are catching up, they are getting better. So to say they don't care is entirely false, they just do not care as much as we do. It is our national sport (forget about lacrosse) for F--- sakes!

Can everyone understand and play soccer? I can't understand it all that well and being able to kick a ball does not make you a player. The only thing I know about it is that you try to attack in threes in a triangle formation. But it is obviously way more complex than that. I do not understand the systems or philosopohies.

  5. Actually, for F-Sakes, Lacrosse and hockey are now know as CO-NATIONAL Sports as per bill C-212 past in 1994. Hockey is the winter and lacrosse is the summer national sport.

Know as for the steroid issue at hand, i agree with the athletes are not role models. The are marketing dreams. The only ones who view these top athletes as role models is NIKE, ADIDAS, GATORADE, ETC... they promote and sell everything from shoes to viagra to car insurance to divorce lawyers.

    HA!

These tweenagers are given millions to do a job that 3 yrs ago they were doing for free and now you try to tell them to behave and stop going to the club and making it rain, cracking crystal like it near beer from the motor hotel in porcupine plane.

Who blames these guys for taking the roids, juicing up and getting paid. I believe you offer Babe Ruth 252 million he would have too and i don't think we would have ever sobered up more then he usually did.

So sports, are just trying to hold onto a mystic that they can protect the boys club and keep on keepin' on. The reality is that when a guy like Shawn Meriman openly takes Roids, gets caught gets a 4 game suspension, we can't wait to have him back to go out and detroy someone else. We want these athletes to be this way. And if Meriman one year goes out and puts up 23 sacks, we will frame his face in the hall of fame beside the gap-toothed wonder boy.

Baseball is all about the numbers and the individual accomplishments. It is not about the WS rings that defines you. if you rock the back of your players card with stats, you will get a hall call. Try to get a hall call in another sport without have a title or two, you might get labelled as the guy who can't win the big game.

As for soccer.....come on, that's a mans game. Here is a spot built on drama queens and flops, cheaters and winers. Instant reply does not do this spot any favors, to she the missed contact collision, for the guy to cry in real tears to get hauled off the field on a nintendo stretcher, to get the magic water sprayed on his leg, and back out there in 23 seconds and proud of his performance to get the other player red carded to score that ever elusive goal.....way to go...1 to nil.

Americans will buy hockey before they buy soccer. Atleast when i guy gets hauled off the ice, it usualy has blood and some suckers chicklets being picked up by the zamboni at intermission, while the other rock-star is getting stitched up on the bench with plyers and a staple-gun from home depot.

    mans game!
