So with the musings that the Phoenix Coyotes are nearing extinction in the desert, comes the typical rumors. Now while it seems Jim Balsille is hell-bent on moving the Desert Dogs to the Golden Horseshoe, that hasn't stopped those in Winnipeg from hoping their beloved Jets might complete the round trip and fly home.
Now just because the Peg once had a team doesn't mean they're entitled to one again. In fact, if you are to consider Winnipeg, why not put the franchise here in Regina? Mayor Fiacco commented on it today saying 'why not'?
Combine the population of the surrounding areas and they are comparable once you take in Saskatoon and Moose Jaw. And while Winnipeg's MTS Centre isn't big enough to house an NHL club, the proposed new Dome in Regina would fit more than enough people.
Now maybe these are just idle dreams, but people believed in Bill Hunter when he almost snagged the St. Louis Blues for Toon-town.
I just think that if Winnipeg feels they can have a team, why couldn't we?? Let's face it, if they can do it, we can do it better!

maybe they can call the team the saskatchewan seal skins.....ala dave osbourne!
ReplyDeleteif the NHL lets them come...the province would bleep their colors, just like it bleeds Green and White all over this country.
move them to saskatoon! regina already has the riders, let us have something fun to do!
ReplyDeleteSaskatoon has proved over and over again they aren't a sports town, would be a huge mistake to have any pro team in Saskatoon
ReplyDeleteSaskatoon and the rest of Saskatchewan loves hockey, but they think big. Saskatoon is a hockey town, but mainly big league hockey. Saskatoon has the right size stadium already made housing 15,195 seats where as Gary Bettman says you only need 15,000 seats to host an NHL game. Saskatoon's arena is bigger than Winnipeg's arena by 193 seats. When it comes to minor league the teams get good support, but not the best, when it comes to pro sports the province is in 200 percent. This is proven to be true where as Regina has 225,000 people and sells on average 5,000 more seats than Winnipeg does in the CFL. Now this team us supported by the whole province with a stream of cars coming through and from Saskatoon before every game. Saskatoon is more centralized and bigger than Regina and has the right size stadium ready to be used for the NHL just waiting. Sell outs in two pre season games that aren't even considered our home team is quite a catch. Now imagine having our home NHL team during regular season games. Sell outs at $90 a ticket would be no problem. Saskatoon/Saskatchewan has proven itself to be a pro sports province over and over again. We love our junior teams, but want the real thing. People would rather pay $90 for an NHL ticket than $15 for a to watch a junior game.
ReplyDeleteLets get teams in both places as well as back to Quebec City and Winnepeg. Lets change the playoff formula so that we build a Canada US rivalry. I also look forward to European teams being part of the equation.
